Crowds of men and women dressed in suits and high heels, music fills the cool winter air, and there’s a growing excitement – it could only be the Las Vegas Market.

In February, Yosemite Home Décor made the ambitious decision to open, not one, not two – but SEVEN showrooms at the Las Vegas Market. They not only opened seven showrooms, but to help bring the best deals on décor to their customers they purchased excess inventory from exhibitors who left market such as Murray Feiss, Casual Creations, Metrotex Designs, Painting Depot and Art 4 Kids and sold them as clearance for next to nothing – a great steal that many customers took advantage of.

For Yosemite Home Décor, there was a lot of success with the contemporary artwork line and glass sinks. Customers present were also the first to see our new line of electric fireplaces which were perceived extremely well, selling out the stock we had and starting pre-sales for the next shipment expected in May.

At the World Market Center we also participated in the first Inspiredesign market on the 4th floor of Building C. In our booth we featured our new portable lighting collection, artwork and architectural décor, including our life-size hippopotamus, Henrietta. It was a great learning experience that will help us to branch out to hospitality buyers as well, which is really exciting!

We had a great market, meeting a lot of great people, and showing off some really exciting new product. If you weren’t able to attend, make a point to come to the next market scheduled for August 2-6, 2010 – you won’t want to miss it!

Have you ever tried doing a word puzzle or play the popular number game of Sudoku? Well, I believe every one of us has at least tried one of the three mentioned.

Every day, where ever we go, we always see a blank space, a blank wall, a blank canvas. Most of the time, we just ignore these blank spaces. Generally we would rather see that blank area stay empty more than have a messy spot, right? People intend to overlook blank spaces, and a lot of times we believe that the blankness doesn’t have an effect on our everyday lives; however, a blank spot is more likely to pull us down than do nothing.

Just a couple years ago, Rockie Bogenschutz represented Yosemite Home Décor in a large trade show and had an array of items from our multiple product lines set-up in the booth. The walls of the booth were plain, boring and otherwise forgettable just like the walls of hundreds of surrounding booths. One evening during market, he took a walk through the building and noticed a booth that sold artwork, having only the walls covered with paintings. This really inspired him. Although artwork had not been the focus for this market, he brought in some of the Yosemite artwork and hung it on the walls of the booth. There was a noticeable difference, not only in the look of the booth, but it helped create an excitement. It helped us stand out and complimented our other products. Filling the blank spaces increased the value of the entire booth and from that point on paintings became not just wall fillers for our booths but also became one of our fastest moving and top selling items.

Going Green

I learned a new word some time ago—“ubiquitous” (it means seemingly everywhere)—and I know how to use it, too: “They’re ubiquitous.” Yes, I know. At best it is a very corny example (dubious at worst), but hang on for a while and allow me to redeem myself by providing the context.

When I gave you that example I was thinking of a steadily growing global movement of conservationists consisting of various autonomous organizations. Although the foci of these individual groups vary, their collective message may be summarized in three words: “Save Mother Earth!” Among many others, one of their most important advocacies has to do with the conservation of planetary resources—particularly, energy. And since energy is consumed everyday globally, their voice is also heard globally. And so, they are indeed ubiquitous.

ENERGY CONSERVATION IN AMERICA

Being the global leader in numerous world issues, the United States of America evidently does not shy from this responsibility. The US Department of Energy’s mission statement has five main thrusts, the first being “Energy Security”. Under this heading the DOE seeks to promote “America’s energy security through reliable, clean, and affordable energy” . I like what they are trying to accomplish. Not only is it Earth-friendly, it makes a lot of sense, too! Now, since we are having this discussion, allow me to segue into my favorite energy conservation subtopic…

Energy-Efficiency
Wikipedia defines the term as “using less energy to provide the same level of energy service. ” This definition perfectly captures the main essence of energy-efficiency. Cars able to run the same number of miles with less fuel are called “fuel-efficient”; consumer products available at the same quantity and quality for lesser prices are said to be “cost-efficient”; and employees who produce the same quantity and quality of work in less time are branded as “time-efficient”. The common factor in all three examples is the idea of having “the same for less”. In the current state of the world’s economy—or any economic state for that matter—do you know of anyone who would not want a piece of this deal?

If the principle of “the same for less” is true for cars, consumer products, and work output, it certainly is true for others also. We live in a time when more and more people are becoming aware that our planet’s natural resources are steadily getting depleted. With the sheer number of “Earth advocates” out there, it is almost inexcusable to not know that we need to conserve energy. One crucial area we can definitely develop a strong sense of energy-efficiency is in lighting.

Energy-Efficient Lighting

The invention and development of the incandescent lightbulb started a revolution in the lighting industry as for the first time ever lighting can be sufficiently controlled. However, as great a milestone as it represents, the fact remains that only roughly 10 percent of the energy used by incandescent lightbulbs produce light; the other 90 percent is wasted through heat emission. As far as I am concerned, this is the epitome of energy-inefficiency in lighting. We are fortunate to live in a time when an alternative exists that leads us in the exact opposite direction—fluorescent lighting.

Consider the following comparative table:

As you can determine, fluorescent lightbulbs can produce the same amount of light as the incandescent while consuming less energy. No wonder why the demand for fluorescent lighting has steadily been rising. This is, without a doubt, definitive of energy-efficiency in the lighting industry.

HELPING SAVE MOTHER EARTH

It gives me a satisfying sense of pride knowing that we in Yosemite Home Décor, through our lighting product line, are seriously into energy-efficiency. We have developed and promoted a section in our catalog, called the Green Living Collection, dedicated to fluorescent lighting fixtures (I will write about this in a future article). Back in September 2008 we applied for, and were granted, partnership with Energy Star, an ongoing project of the DOE that actively promotes energy-efficiency (this will be the topic of another future article). In March 2010, we were informed by ICF International, a professional service firm that works closely with the DOE, that three of our exterior sconces—-ES, FL5013BR-ES, and FL5315DBR-ES—have earned the Energy Star mark (another subject for yet another future article), in effect certifying that these are highly energy-efficient products. Evidently, we are making efforts to help save Mother Earth.

GOING GREEN

Obviously, as a business entity involved in the lighting industry, there still is a lot we can do to advocate energy-efficiency. What we have done so far is good, and what we have yet to accomplish will speak of our commitment. I am proud to be part of a team that is conscious of, and does something about, the need for efficient energy consumption. I am confident you see this need as clearly as we do, if not more. So let me end this article with an invitation: Let us all go green.

Exploring Social Networking: FACEBOOK

It’s undeniable that social media is sweeping the world, and changing the way we all do business. It allows instant connections between businesses and consumers, a very advantageous attribute, however, if not used correctly it can cause more harm than good. To help introduce you to social networking and how to use it, over the next few months I will be giving you a tour of popular sites and lending some tips I have acquired in managing the Yosemite Home Décor social networking pages. This week I would like to start with what I personally believe is the most influential, Facebook.

• Allows you to connect with customers and get to know them
• Provides a venue for customers to review your products/services
• Allows you to share photos
• Instantly connect to all of your fans at once
• When used properly, it can give customers a positive image of your business
• Real-time communication
• Control of information

How to Get Started

My first recommendation is to go to this website: http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_108_use-facebook.html and watch their videos that walk you through the process of signing up for Facebook and becoming familiar with what it can do. Do not create a business page without first becoming familiar with Facebook or you may do more harm to your business than good. Remember, you want to use Facebook as a professional tool for your business.

Once you’re ready to create your business page, log-in to your personal Facebook account, then go to this website: http://www.facebook.com/advertising/#!/advertising/?pages. Read through the four tabs and click “Get Started” when you’re done reading. This will walk you through the process of creating your page. Be sure to upload your company logo as your profile picture and fill out the “Info” section of your page.

Next, let your customers know you’re online! I recommend adding the Facebook logo at the bottom of your website, e-mail signature and any advertising you do. This will help customers you already have find you online so you can start communicating. One option to help find fans and create awareness of your business is to create an ad on Facebook. You are able to name your price and your demographic, just keep in mind that you want your bid to align with the “suggested bid” so that you get a good amount of impressions each day. You decide how much to spend, and who to spend it on – what a deal! You can start your ad by clicking on “Promote with an Ad” under your photo on your business page. It will walk you through the process, step by step.

We are excited to introduce our new National Sales Manager, Dennis Hoth! He brings with him experience at all levels: showroom sales, sales representative and manufacturer’s sales manager. Dennis first worked with lighting in 1984 at Vermont Lighting in Burlington, VT. From there, he moved to Southern California working with Quoizel as a sales representative, establishing Arizona and Southern Nevada as his territory. Since that time, he has worked as regional sales manager and national sales manager at companies such as American de-Rosa, Woodbridge Lighting and Maxlite. He brings a broadened perspective and fresh ideas to our, already well-established foundation at Yosemite Home Décor. Outside of the office, Dennis fills his time with personal interests such as running, cycling, drawing photography and painting.

I’ve tried different things in my bathroom to liven it up, but nothing is helping. I’m trying to create an Asian get-a-way, but everything I’m seeing looks bulky to me and my space isn’t that big. I see you carry a lot of décor for the home. What would you suggest?

Many things can change the look of a room such as paint colors and new hardwood floors, but slight variations can give you the look you desire. Incorporate a sense of soft illuminations in your space by adding new lights such as one of my favorites; the Sentinel 3-light Vanity light. It has the feel of an oriental inspired design, with clean lines between the Amber Scarvo Glass and a Venetian Bronze finish. It can create added depth, while not overwhelming your space. You can balance the look by eliminating a regular bathroom sink, and replacing it with a Zen Vessel Sink, such as the Brendan made from a polished sand marble, or the Cody in polished black granite. SAYING GOODBYE TO 2009 by Mindy Platt

When I think back on the past year a lot has happened! In January we made the big move from our Madera warehouse to our new Fresno warehouse, allowing us to shorten ship times! We also lowered our pricing on our Lu Previte Signature Lighting Collection, making it more affordable to display in showrooms across the country. In February we attended the Winter 2009 Las Vegas Market, where we met some truly remarkable people who we have since built great relationships with. In March we exhibited at the Hearth, Patio & Barbeque Association in Reno, Nevada where we unveiled our fantastic new Evolution Mantels – the feedback was terrific! In April we added over 50 new pieces of artwork to our Contemporary Collection, which customers took to immediately! In May we hosted Epicurean Delights, a spectacular event that showcased some of the finest local restaurants and helped raise money for the Fresno Fire Chief’s Foundation. The warm summer heat hit us mid-June along with a slue of birthdays to celebrate! This month also marked our launch of the Yosemite Home Décor Facebook Fan Page, as well as our beginning on Twitter! July brought us the newest member of our team, Lynae Edralin, who works as our Customer Specialist, assisting in all aspects of customer relations. August was full of trips to and from Las Vegas, preparing our showrooms. September brought the Fall 2009 Las Vegas Market where we worked tirelessly in all four of our showrooms, smashing records and building great customer relationships. In October we exhibited at the High Point Market, with Luckie Bogenschutz taking the lead roll! In November we said goodbye to a valued member of our team, Steve Previte, as he decided to retire to spend time with his family and travel. December brings the warmth of loved ones crowded around dining room tables, reminding each of us what we’re most thankful for – a perfect ending to an extraordinary year!

As we enjoy the final days of 2009, we look forward to the bright new future waiting just around the corner. Help us ring in the year 2010! We have a lot of surprises in store for you to launch us into the New Year, so be sure to keep an eye out!

MAPLE by Mindy Platt

This time of year, the Maple tree leaves throughout the Yosemite Valley have turned from green to fantastic shades of red, orange and yellow and have started falling, carpeting the Valley in their brilliantly warm colors. Outside of Yosemite National Park, maple trees are commonly harvested and used in veneer production for furniture, but is also known to be used for piano frames, guitar bodies and even salad bowls. The trees are also tapped for maple syrup that is bottled for household consumption. As saplings, maple trees are leafed through by deer, horses and other herbivores. Currently the largest maple tree is located in Oregon and measures a whopping 11’ 11” in diameter and 101’ tall with a top spread of over 90’! Maples are beautiful trees, changing with the seasons and providing much needed shade during the hot summer months. They are used widely as part of landscaping because of their great adaptability to different soils, as well as their natural beauty.

Similar to the maple tree, our Maple family of lights has a very natural look. Looking at what I consider the focal point of the family, the 2520DB chandelier, you can see how the frame whimsically curves down into an almost tear-drop shape. Arms protrude from all sides as branches extend from their trunk, curling back downwards to reveal nine gorgeous light shades made of a frosted alabaster glass. For versatility, the family is also available with a satin nickel frame.

Elegant and strong, both the tree, and the lighting family are full of beauty that you have to see to realize completely.

He has proven to be an invaluable asset to the team, diving into huge projects such as preparing our Mantel and Range Hood catalogs. Brian has gone above and beyond, spending days unboxing product, staging it, and photographing it for our catalogs. He then follows the catalog through each stage, working closely with the graphics team to ensure every detail is covered.

Something you may not know is that Brian is the one who named each piece of artwork in our line – which was not an easy task! His creativity, mixed with his love of a good challenge, has really helped him excel at every assignment thrown his way. We are very thankful to have him on our team, and can’t wait to see the new Range Hoods catalog he has been tirelessly working on!

Good Morning Robyn,

I’ve asked our resident Mantels expert, Brian Peregrina, and he told me we have no certificate at this point – but rigorous in-house testing has proven the resistance. We placed a ½” thick Eco-Stone (what our Evolution Mantels are made of) tile over an open flame, 18,000K BTU burner, and placed a candle on top of it. 18K BTU can melt just about anything you put in front of it, but it couldn’t melt the candle through our tile. We’ve got a container of these on the market being used in homes already on vent free fireplaces (which are the hottest) and are doing wonderful.

We are in the process, however, of attaining certification from independent testing facilities, and will make this information available once completed. Please let me know if this helps, and let me know if you need anything else. I’m more than happy to assist you!

“It’s just like riding a bike.” Chances are, you have heard this assuring statement before, of course, and it is always a welcome thought. It essentially means that once a skill is critically learned, you have it for life. Sure, you may have to fumble a while when going at it again after some time of non-use, but it would not take long for you to be fully competent again—just like riding a bike. One thing we cannot afford to neglect, though, is the fact that for you to come to that point, you must first learn to ride a bike.

In a peculiar sense, learning about lighting is somewhat similar. I recall my first few months in training to handle the lighting product line of Yosemite Home Décor and remember feeling overwhelmed with the influx of technical information on items I never before paid close attention to. I had to force myself to figure out how to match a set of specifications with an existing item number. Needless to say I found it very difficult. Each product type presented a unique set of challenges to learning, but I was never more perplexed than when I began tackling the light bulbs.

Rockie Bogenschutz and Steve Previte, my mentors, made it sound so easy. Rockie would effortlessly talk about the A19 like he was describing his hands; Steve would give me instructions on the PAR30 as though it was the only thing he ever thought of his entire life. As for me, I knew they spoke English, but they might as well have spoken Martian—it was difficult. I resolved then that if I were to keep up, I needed to crack the light bulb code—its alpha-numeric naming system. After all, T8, R20, PL13, E26, and MR16 had to mean something, right?

UNDERSTANDING THE ALPHA-NUMERIC CODE

So, what do the letters and numbers on the light bulbs mean? In most cases, an alpha-numeric code is printed on the item. When broken down, these letters and numbers correspond to certain aspects of a bulb’s description. This is much easier understood with an example. Let us take the most common bulb, the A19E26. Here, “A” refers to the bulb’s shape, “19” refers to the bulb’s size (particularly, its diameter at its widest part measured in eighths of inches), “E” refers to the base type, and “26” refers to the base’s size (its diameter measured in millimeters). Put it together and we have a standard pear-shaped bulb measuring 19/8 inches (2.37 inches) in diameter with a screw-type base measuring 26 millimeters in diameter.

Following are some letters and numbers in the lighting industry and their respective meanings:

UNDERSTANDING THE Y.H.D. ALPHA-NUMERIC CODE

We in Yosemite Home Décor have made an effort to personalize the light bulbs in our inventory Our point is that we want our bulbs to immediately be identified with our Company. As such, we did a little tinkering with the industry’s alpha-numeric numbering system and added a simple twist, YHD-style. To help us better understand this, I have taken three item numbers to represent the incandescent, compact fluorescent, and tube-type fluorescent groups. Here they are:

JUST LIKE RIDING A BIKE

More than a year after that resolution to learn the light bulb’s alpha-numeric coding system I still speak occasionally with Rockie and Steve about them, but I am able to keep up now. Sometimes I get drawn into the lighting section of department stores and stay there for a while. I look at those letter-number combinations and immediately understand what they mean—or at least it takes me a short while to get reacquainted when I look at them again after not seeing them for some time. Evidently, I have developed this familiarity because I have learned to “crack the code”.

So, if you are new to the lighting industry and find yourself frequently lost in a conversation about light bulbs, I can definitely relate to you. Simply learn the basic meanings of those letters and numbers and you will soon enough find yourself illuminated (pun intended)! When you have learned to crack the light bulb code, trust me, that skill will remain with you for a very long time—long enough for you to easy recall even after a lengthy period of non-use. It will be just like riding a bike.

I have a customer with 25ft ceilings and I’ll need extra chain and wire for the “Mckensi” Chandelier and Mini-pendant lights I ordered. Can I get those as well?

Deborah,

That’s a great question! Generally, all our Lu Previte chandeliers come with 6 feet of chain and 8 feet of wiring, as well as any mini-pendants that don’t include stems. We understand that some buildings may have higher ceilings and could require extra feet, so we’ve made that possible by offering the option to order more length. You have two choices: you may require the extra feet of chain and wiring to be packaged separately, or you may request us to add the length of wiring and chain to the chandeliers and mini-pendants. This convenience will cost you an extra $45, allowing you to receive your pieces ready to hang with minimal preparation! Chain and wiring are sold collectively at only $1.95 per foot.

When you think of Yosemite National Park, what image comes to mind? Half Dome is arguably the most renowned sight in the park standing just shy of 5,000 feet above the valley floor. The spectacle consists entirely of granite stone and was formed by glacial movements. It was originally called “Tis-sa-ack” by the Native Americans, meaning Cleft Rock. Due to the renowned recognition of Half Dome, it is featured in many company logos such as those of The Sierra Club and Sierra Entertainment.

Half Dome is not only a high point of tourism, but a great attraction for hikers across the world. In 1875, the first hiker, George Anderson, made the dangerous journey to the top of Half Dome. Since that time, trails have been made, allowing thousands of people the opportunity to experience the spectacular view from the top. The hike is about 14-16 miles round-trip, but the reward isn’t only making it to the top. Hikers enjoy phenomenal views of Vernal and Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap, and the rest of the Yosemite Valley while slowly making the tedious 10-12 hour hike by way of metal cables.

Vernal Falls

Hidden, yet accessible by the Mist Trail, awaits the powerful beauty of Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park. Before being renamed in 1851 as “Vernal” by Lafayette Bunnell, a member of the Mariposa Brigade, it was known as Yan-o-pah, or little cloud, by the locals. Beginning near the Happy Isles Nature Center, the path to this beautiful waterfall is sandy and rocky at first. It winds through wooded land just north of the Merced River, and as the path gradually ascends, the view looking back towards Yosemite Valley becomes more dramatic. Through the trail, and depending on the time of the year, hikers can find themselves drenched hiking through the mist of the falls.

Many steep steps take the trail up the rock face beside the waterfall, after which the path emerges onto a large, flat open area at the top near the Emerald Pool. Dropping about 50 feet off a 30 degree slope of polished granite is an unusual cascade known as the Silver Apron. Vernal Falls towers a staggering 317 feet high. Because of these alluring features, Vernal Falls is considered one of the most precarious waterfalls in Yosemite.

And similar to the landmark, the Vernal Falls lighting family is a favorite by many with its transitional and powerful design.
